2006年に別々のプロジェクト (The Same Girl / Gekko)で来日し、スーパー・デラックスでも演奏したスイスのパーカッショ二ストの二コラ・フィールド (Nicolas Field) とアレクサンドル・バベル (Alexandre Babel) は今年も7月、8月にバターカップ・メタル・ポリシュ (Buttercup Metal Polish) というドラム・デュオで全国ツアーを行います。
インプロビゼーション・コミュニティで多大なリスペクトを集めているポルトガルのレーベルCreative Sources RecordingsでリリースされたアルバムではButtercupはどのフリー・ミュージックスタイルにも属さない音楽を創り上げてきました。
今回のライブでもこの2人の攻撃的な音楽性の強さ、そして彼らの想いを感じられるでしょう。
ニコラとアレクサンドルはこれまで様々なフリー・ジャーズ、インプロビゼーション、ノイズ、オーケストラなどのミュージシャンと共演しています。Maja Ratkje、Fe-mail、Jazzkammer、灰野敬二、大友良英、Phô、Peeesseye、宇波拓、K.K. Null、Fuckhead、Axel Dörner、ダモ鈴木、Berliner Ensemble、International Percussion Centerなど。
今年のスーパー・デラックスでのイベントでもその他の多くの素晴らしいアーティスト達が出演、また、Buttercupと共演します。

・エクスペリメンタル・ギタリストのカル・ライアル(Cal Lyall)と秋山徹次による初の共演
・ドラム＆ビジュアル・ユニットのD.V.D.がまたスーパー･デラックスでの素晴らしく、面白いビジュアルワークによるフリーク・ショーを展開

A pair of nomadic drummers with loose ties to the Swiss city of Geneva and further bases in Amsterdam and Berlin, Nicolas Field and Alexandre Babel are the two halves of percussive pair-up Buttercup Metal Polish.

Under that moniker, Field and Babel set out for structured and semi-structured improvisations that yield to none of the canonized idioms of the avant-garde, bundling raw energy with purposeful virtuosity. The duo pulls no punches, whether it’s hitting the skins hard or scraping the eeriest of soundscapes from the bottom of its toolkit – as heard on their first album “50 Ballets”, released by the highly respected Creative Sources label.

Field and Babel have a long track record of collaboration in free music and noise (Maja Ratkje, Fe-mail, Jazzkammer, Keiji Haino, Phô, Peeesseye, K.K. Null, Fuckhead, Axel Dörner, Damo Suzuki, and many more) as well as in structured ensemble work (Berliner Ensemble, International Percussion Center). Both visited Super Deluxe in 2006 with different projects, improv-noise duo The Same Girl (Field) and experimental jazz outfit Gekko (Babel).

Buttercup Metal Polish’s 2007 Japan Tour brings the two back to SDLX for an evening of off-the-cuff juxtapositions and interpolations with fellow free spirits: vibraphonist Kumiko Takara, known to many through her work with Otomo Yoshihide’s New Jazz Ensemble, will join the Buttercups, while leftfield guitar shamans Tetuzi Akiyama and Cal Lyall shall cross axes for the first time. To top it all, crowd favorite D.V.D. (drummers Itoken and Jimanica + ymg) will have another exhilarating and hilarious go at their drum-triggered visual pixel-freakshow – do yourself a favor if you’ve never been submitted to it yet. A nice topper for an evening of explosive encounters.
