Since its birth in 2007, the trio’s sound and shape has been highly reactive and constantly morphing from the onset, always being a band that is bigger than just the sum of its parts. Never trying to fit into any conventional guitar-trio-stereotype, UpDog unleashes heavy rotating thunderstorms of free-jazz/noise-rock juxtaposed against fragile sound impressions with an unusually high level of musicianship. “Up until the encore UpDog exclusively performed original compositions, and one could only wonder how these young musicians came to such a mature and balanced sound.” (Uschi Meister, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, July 2010) Who is UpDog? UpDog is an international collaborative project comprised of some of the most promising young musicians from three different cities. In various settings, they have performed across the globe at festivals and esteemed venues such as the Blue Note, NYC, Ronnie Scott's, London, and Porgy and Bess, Vienna, to name a few. Austrian-Japanese Guitarist Kenji Herbert, currently residing in New York City, is an inaugural member and recent graduate of Berklee College of Music's prestigious Global Jazz Institute. He maintains an international presence as a leader and sideman of a wide range of collaborative projects. Lukas Kranzelbinder is a young Austrian Bassist, living and working in Vienna. A formidable presence in the scene, he was awarded several prizes from the Austrian Government, most recently The New Austrian Sound of Music award which will fund the presentation of his music internationally. Drummer Dave Smith, from London, is one of the finest young drummers on the British creative music scene. Best known for his work with the band Outhouse, his collaborative efforts with West African musicians, and the Loop.Collective, he is also one of the city's busiest sidemen.
