”Pulse” is a multimedia production based on a commissioned musical composition by John Lilja and Dag Egil Njaa, in collaboration with Japanese visual artists Tetsuya Nagato and Hiraku Suzuki. The work consists of artistic structures rooted in the concept of pulse: pulse in which sounds smallest building blocks, in rhythm, in movement, in personal interaction, in biology, in everything where improvisation between musicians and artists have room to mutually reciprocate the pieces’ development. Tetsuya Nagato is an award-winning artist, artistic leader and graphic designer who does, among other things, digital photo collages as well as more traditional collage and illustration. Hiraku Suzuki is a prolific artist and graphic designer who works with art installations and live painting. Through drawing, painting and collage, they both improvise their own visual compositions in conversation with Kitchen Orchestra’s musical performance. Kitchen is a rotating body of musicians with no one leader. A collective force of creativity combined with an invited external composer/bandleader directing them into unrestrained and unpredicted musical territories. This results in wide ranging musical ventures and collaborations that have include Alexander von Schlippenbach, Øyvind Torvund, Inbal Pinto, Evan Parker, Keith Tippet, Trevor Wishart, Reidar Larsen, Svein Tang Wa, Steve Beresford, David Kane, and Lotte Anker. Kitchen has most recently recorded an album with Alexander von Schlippenbach to be released later this year. MEMBERS  Petter Frost Fadnes - Saxophone / Electronics Born in Stavanger, Norway in 1974. He has played regularly since the age of 16, performing within everything from heavy metal to ska, improvised music and jazz. In 1996 Petter moved to the UK to do a degree in jazz; eventually ending up with a PhD in Performance in 2004. He has been active in and around the vibrant Leeds music-scene and co-founded Leeds Improvised Music Association (LIMA); now defining innovation in British jazz and improvised music. In 2008 Petter relocated to his hometown to work as a freelance musician, while taking up a post at the University of Stavanger. Main projects are The Geordie Approach (UK/NO), The Thin Red Line (UK/NO) and Kitchen Orchestra (NO).  Didrik Ingvaldsen - Trumpet / Electronics Born and raised in Norway, Didrik Ingvaldsen has compiled credentials that span the world of music, from conservatory studies at Juilliard to participation in the NYC downtown jazz scene, lecturing at the Leeds College of Music UK, and teaching brass music in Tanzania and the Faroe Islands. Gunhild Seim - Trumpet / Electronics Gunhild Seim is a norwegian composer and trumpet player. Her music has been performed by artists like The Norwegian Wind Ensemble, Marilyn Crispell, Katya Sourikova, Banff Jazz Orchestra, Trym Bjønnes and others. Seim has been characterized as an abundant source of ideas, with her irreverent music, whose preferences and references know no boundaries. As part of the large improv ensemble Kitchen Orchestra, and with her own quartet Gunhild Seim & Time Jungle, she has created hybrids of popular music and creative music, of the known and the unknown. Her music is best described using contradictions and polarities.  Nils Henrik Asheim - Hammond B3 / Electronics Nils Henrik Asheim (b.1960) is active both as a composer and a performer. He is regularly commissioned by the major Norwegian festivals and symphony orchestras. Asheim has been awarded several prizes for his theatrical, vocal and instrumental music as well as site-specific installations. As a performer, Asheim is known as an innovative improviser on church organ. He also appears on the piano as a member of Kitchen Orchestra, ZAS Trio and other constellations. Since 1991 Asheim has lived in Stavanger, Norway, where he is active as a cultural organizer, not least as founding father of Tou Scene, a multi-disciplinary arts space in a former brewery.  John Lilje - Electric Bass Bassist/composer John Lilja (1970) was born in Kingston, New York and grew up in Vermont. Lilje studied jazz composition at Berklee College of Music, graduating Magne cum laude in 1993 and moved to Stavanger, Norway in 1997. He has performed and recorded with a number of internationally renowned musicians, including Frode Gjerstad, Arve Henriksen, Per Zanussi, and Kjetil Møster. He has composed music for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), Metropole Orkest in the Netherlands, and written big band arrangements for Cameroonian bassist Richard Bona. He will release his debut album as a band leader in the autumn of 2012. [John Lilje homepage](www.johnlilja.no)  Thomas Bang - Electric Bass Thomas grew up in a little town in the south of Norway, where life is full of time and space. In an early age he was fascinated by jazz music, and as a consequence he picked up the the double bass, and later on, the electric bass. Now Thomas is known for his expressionistic, exprimental and often very groovy aproach to music. He lived some years in Copenhagen, DK, where he studied at the Rythmic Music Conservatory. He currently works as a bass player in different bands and orchestras based in the nordic region.  Dag Egil Njaa - MaxMSP Dag Egil Njaa (b 1969) has written about 50 pieces of music for various ensembles as well as film, theater, electro-acoustics, interactive compositions and installations. He also performs live electronics in various ensembles. In 1997 he won the joint 1st prize of EBBA's international competition for young composers and has been a member of the Norwegian Society of Composers since 2003. Njaa has for many years used max/msp in his work, and for the last years emphesised interactive multimedia compositions/performance.  Ståle Birkeland - Drums, Electronics Ståle Birkeland is a drummer born in Voss, Norway in 1981. He currently lives in Stavanger, working in a variety of bands such as [The Geordie Approach](www.thegeordieapproach.com), Kitchen Orchestra, [EGG3[(www.egg3.no), Pocket Corner, and [Maschinenfestung](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oth_p8sKq6s). He has toured extensively in Norway and Europe, and has also performed the solo piece "La Rage" at ICA (The Institute for Contemporary Art) in London.  Dag Magnus Narvesen - Drums Narvesen started playing the drums at a very young age but it wasn't until the age of 16, when he discovered free music through Peter Brötzmann, Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman and many others, that he left his childhood dream of becoming a fighter pilot and started focusing all his efforts into creating and exploring music. Since then, he has been a part of the experimental jazz scene in Stavanger and been fortunate enough to have worked with many great musicians, both locally and globally. After jazz studies in Stavanger and Trondheim, he moved to Oslo where he currently resides. If someone asked him the impossible question to sum up his musical approach, he would probably think for about three seconds and answer "energy." Although his sounds was inspired by the new age movement, he would probably mean it in the most down-to-earth way possible.  Dominique Brackeva - Trombone / Vocals Brackeva is a Belgian trombonist/composer/singer who studied jazz in the Netherlands and worked extensively as freelance musician while living in Amsterdam between 2000 and 2009. Living in Norway since 2009, Brackeva has been involved in a variety of projects in many styles, ranging from jazz, to salsa, balkan music, hip hop, and chanson française.
