Once again TokyoDex christens the New Year with our flagship event “This&That Café” at SuperDeluxe. The 2015 cast features a rare combination of analog and digital delights that could only be described as an embarrassment of riches. From the Reggae-Soul-Flamenco stylings of Shamanz, to the bold pop-art strokes of Jay Shogo’s live painting, #TnTCafe vol.23 promises to take you on a deeply artistic multi-sensory journey. Seriously folks, this is going to be one for the books. Come early and stay late!

Shamanz
Acoustic duo project started in 2010 by a solo artist TAMA TSUBOI,Sean Harada from THE STONE SUN and percussionist Naoki Kawashima as THE STONE SUN ACOUSTIC. Shortly after Naoki Kawashima left the band in 2011, Tama Tsuboi met KOJI SONODA, RYAN MIZUNO, KAI PETTIE, and GOW KUMAGAI, who are the current members of Shamanz. Shamanz sonds are inspired by Tama Tsuboi’s influences from Flamenco, Latin, Alternative, Jazz and World Music.

JAY SHOGO (Liveart)
Since 2009, artist Jay Shogo has been creating his artwork using Sharpie permanent markers using from 20 to 100 Sharpies per painting. Jay started his career as a retail salesperson in a small boutique in Tokyo, Japan, where he grew up. He eventually founded his own company in 2005. Jay now has two brands, “High Light Cavalet” for clothing and “beik” for eyewear, both in Tokyo. Jay’s experience of traveling all over the World has been a huge influence on his work. In 2009, he visited the U.S. for the first time and he has been inspired by both the American culture and people. During his time in America, he various techniques and now uses acrylics, spray paints, and Sharpies for both his canvases and murals. His work can be seen at “5POINTZ” in New York City, “Wynwood Walls” in Miami, and various locations across Tokyo.

Shogo Yoshii
Shogo Yoshii is a former member of the taiko performing arts ensemble Kodo. He entered the Kodo Apprentice Centre in 2003 and became a Kodo member in 2007. On stage, he was featured on taiko drums, metallic percussion, bamboo flutes, kokyu (Japanese violin) and in dance pieces. In 2010, he joined the musical ensemble of “Babel,” choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet. In the same year, he served as music director and performer in Arte y Solera’s flamenco piece, “Dojoji.” His original composition “Sora” is used in a textbook for Japanese elementary school students.

Makoto Saito
Makoto began to play electric guitar and joined bands at the age of 13. He mainly played in dance clubs and at live-music events. In 1987 after studying in the U.S., his music style switched to flamenco guitar. He made his first visit to Spain in 1993, and has visited frequently since then, developing close relationships with “Gitano” (Spanish gypsy) artists and participating in many festivals. After performing his music across California, he came back to Japan and is now based in Tokyo. In 2013, he took part in the show “Amor!Amor!Amor!” produced by the “Arte y Solera” dance company, performed at the Festival de Jerez in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.

Anna Sato
A native of Japan’s beautiful Amami Oshima island, Anna Sato has been singing Shimauta (island songs) from the age of three. She learned the traditional songs of Amami from her grandfather as a child and went on to win innumerable Shimauta contests well into her teens. At the age of 18, she began her music career in Tokyo and has since released seven albums that span various genres. In July 2011, she gained further popularity for her performance at World Gymnaestrada in Switzerland and has also served as an official vocalist for Cirque du Soleil. In 2015, she will reprise her role as Fontaine in the Japanese production of Les Miserables and has plans to release a brand new CD is the traditional Shimauta style.

Yumingo & Friends
Vocalist YUMINGO leads a group of friends who play mostly Jazz in venues across Tokyo. YUMINGO has been a guest at the This&That Cafe since its inception in 2012, and she promises to deliver another stellar performance with this new ensemble.

Chie Sakamoto
Chie Sakamoto began playing piano at the age of 4. She studied classical music at the school of education at Ehime University, studying under Fumio Karashima. At the same time, she played as a jazz pianist in a big band, and has put out two albums: one is her own “C-Base Meeting Think and Forget” released from What’s New Records and the other is a mini album “老後は道後でどう？” (How about a Second Life in Dogo?) by the Sakamoto Band. The latter received attention from local media in Ehime Prefecture (Dogo refers to one of the cities in Ehime). She now performs at clubs and live spaces around Tokyo as a member of several different units.

Based in Tokyo, two-man unit +null consists of dancer Rei Maruyama and graphic designer Koh Katsuda. Their unique performances combine classical Japanese dance with carefully crafted motion graphics.

Maiko Miyagawa (Live photography)
Photographer Maiko Miyagawa started taking photos as a high-school student and would later go on to study photography at the Nihon Univerity College of Art. Upon graduation she worked as an assistant for renowned photographer Hidemi Seto and began her solo career in 2003. Today she takes photos of live events including theater, dance and music for magazines, printed advertisements, album covers et al.

Born in 1988, Tokyo. Yuya Takeda is multi 2D/3D, motion graphics, musician, interaction design general artist working in Japan.

Unusual Club (Djs)
Our musical style is very broad, hence the “Unusual” name. We typically play a back-to-back set. It sometimes creates discordances since our taste and mood can be different, but we appreciate the “wave” that results. Although our musical styles range from rock, indie, reggae, asl the way to dub, funk, jazz, new wave and hip hop, the common ‘roots’ that we often revisit are mostly electronic/techno/house. We have been regular DJs at SNIFF SNIFF (now Roarrr) and CONTROL parties. Paul is English and Sebastien is French Canadian, both based in Tokyo for about 8 years.

This&That Cafe is a free event open to the public in which artists from all genres and backgrounds donate their time and talents in the spirt of sharing. It is a place where music and visual arts meld in unexpected collaborations. A forum for artists from afar to meet with local luminaries amidst the dense and eclectic pool of talent in Tokyo. A venue to gather, exchange ideas, share artistic inclinations and wax poetic in a causal community of old friends and new acquaintances. Come early to get a seat and take advantage of the fetching fare on the SuperDeluxe menu, or just pop in for a drink on your way home from work. All are welcome.
