In early 2011, the TokyoDex crew got together and said, “wouldn’t it be cool if we make an event where we could showcase all of the talents of the artists and musicians we have met over the years?!” And thus, This&That Café was born. 5 years later we are still running strong, and #TnTCafe has become a driving force in the Tokyo arts scene. Join us for an evening of art and music that celebrates tour 5th year anniversary with a formidable cast of both old friends and first-time performers. Not to be missed!

LOOP POOL
Formed in 2008, LOOP POOL is an instrumental jam band  featuring Toshiyuki Kashiwabara on guitar, Eiji Koide on upright bass, and Shota Mizuguchi on drums. Influenced by both electronica and jazz, they perform at open air music festivals, clubs, cafes and on the streets of Tokyo.

Dead Sea Dropouts
Founded in 2011, Dead Sea Dropouts have made their name playing bars,clubs, charity events, weddings and small festivals in and around Tokyo. We offer listeners a unique opportunity to hear our interpretation of Eastern European traditional music. Our group of Tokyo-based oddballs from around Japan and around the world can relate in some ways to the traveling musicians who shaped the music we play-we are all finding our footing in a new place while carrying our instruments on our backs.

Ramses
Ramses is an unusual jazz quartet consisting of a guitarist, drummer and two koto (Japanese zither) players. Having played the jazz festival circuit for many years, they are planning to release their debut CD this year. Come listen to the unique and lyrical sounds of jazz with a traditional Japanese touch. Masaki Murata (-Muratap Masaking-)
Masaki Murata was born in Kurokawagun Tomiyamachi, Miyagi-Ken. In 1991, when he was in the 5th grade, Masaki performed for the first time in front of an audience to the sounds of MC Komiya, a famous comedian celebrity at the time. Masaki began learning street dance in high school. He was inspired by the culture of HIPHOP dancing and began to attend club events on a weekly basis. At 24, Masaki encountered tap dancing and it has been his prime passion ever since.

Yoshifusa Haraguchi（Multipurpose percussionist）
My musical expression is based on inspiration from nature, mainly forests and mountains. I create music by using various instruments such as Logdrum, Cajon and Calimba. I’m on a quest to explore the possibilities of musical instruments and physical control over the human body to develop original improvised music. I’m working on not only solo gigs but also outdoor festivals, collaboration with various painters, tap dancers, workshops in music communication between parents and children, etc.

JAY SHOGO (Liveart)
Since 2009, artist Jay Shogo has been creating his artwork using Sharpie permanent markers using from 20 to 100 Sharpies per painting. Jay started his career as a retail salesperson in a small boutique in Tokyo, Japan, where he grew up. He eventually founded his own company in 2005. Jay now has two brands, “High Light Cavalet” for clothing and “beik” for eyewear, both in Tokyo. Jay’s experience of traveling all over the World has been a huge influence on his work. In 2009, he visited the U.S. for the first time and he has been inspired by both the American culture and people. During his time in America, he various techniques and now uses acrylics, spray paints, and Sharpies for both his canvases and murals. His work can be seen at “5POINTZ” in New York City, “Wynwood Walls” in Miami, and various locations across Tokyo.

Based in Tokyo, METEOR GRAPHICS is an artist and designer who continues to pursue new expressions through live-painting, design and illustration. The appeal of his live painting sessions lie not only within the finished product, but in revealing the process itself.

Mariya Suzuki
Mariya Suzuki was born in Nara and studied illustration in Long Beach,California. She currently works as an illustrator in Tokyo. She has contributed her work for many musicians, food professionals, and books and magazines from around the world. In addition to printed media, she also collaborates with interior designers to draw murals. Aside from work, she enjoys going around town to draw subjects whose shape or story catches her attention. At This&That Cafe, she will be showing live projections of her drawings, as well as offering a Pop-Up Portrait Shop where you can commission a portrait on site!

“Metamorphosis” with Firefly
FireFly creates personalised experiences at events using NFC technology combined with digital art. At This&That Cafe, guests are invited to check-in at stations inside the space to activate projections and become a part of the visual experience at This&That Café. A quick sign-in process on site connects you directly to this interactive installation designed by digital artist and TokyoDex member Alexis Andre in collaboration with renowned illustrator Pokke104.

scene5 is a local Tokyo DJ who picks up gigs here and there spinning everything from 90s hip-hop to electro house and jazz. Old or new, upbeat or lounge, he prides himself on spinning fresh tracks that match the mood of the event.

This&That Cafe is a periodic event open to the public in which artists from all genres and backgrounds donate their time and talents in the spirt of sharing. It is a place where music and visual arts meld in unexpected collaborations. A forum for artists from afar to meet with local luminaries amidst the dense and eclectic pool of talent in Tokyo. A venue to gather, exchange ideas, share artistic inclinations and wax poetic in a causal community of old friends and new acquaintances. Come early to get a seat and take advantage of the fetching fare on the SuperDeluxe menu, or just pop in for a drink on your way home from work. All are welcome.
