In 2010 TokyoDex Creative Director Daniel Harris Rosen began a 6-month residency at SuperDeluxe where he helped curate the venue’s unique programming. It was during that time that he came up with the concept for This&That Café, an open forum in which artists from all genres and backgrounds could come together to meld music and visual arts in unexpected and often unprecedented collaborations. Over 7 years and 40 shows later, #tntcafe has become a staple of Tokyo’s art community and one of SuperDeluxe’s longest-running regular events. We were so saddened to hear SDLX would be closing its doors in early 2019, but we are so grateful for the chance to say goodbye and show our gratitude in style. Please join TokyoDex and an all-star cast of #tntcafe alumni as we celebrate years of fierce artistic exploration and bid farewell to Tokyo’s favorite “good-thinking, good-drinking” place.

■ SHAMANZ

Led by guitarist and songwriter Tama Tsuboi, SHAMANZ are a group of multi-genre musicians whose acoustic roots explode with passion, mixing elements of latin, reggae, jazz pop, soul, Japanese traditional and world-music sounds. Forming as a group in 2012, they have since graced the stages of innumerable events and festivals including Fujirock and Rising Sun. Tama’s partners in crime are Simon Koperu (Bass), Mike Marrington (Drums), Winterhawk Spencer (Percussion), Gu (Trumpet), Yasuo Nishimoto (Saxophone) and Naoto Miyazawa (Keyboard).

■ Moss

Based in Tokyo, Moss have been gigging as an acoustic and electric band since 2007, blending rock, funk, and a passion for melodies. Long-time friends of TokyoDex, the band has been on hiatus recently, so this home-coming performance to #TnTCafe marks a rare chance to see them perform live.

■ Kate Beck

Kate Beck is a singer /songwriter from California living and performing in Tokyo. Though she grew up playing classical violin and later picked up the guitar, for most of her life Kate mainly wrote and performed songs only to her family and close friends. She got up on a Tokyo stage a year ago and has been playing stages and singing in commercials across Tokyo since. Accompanied by personal anecdotes and often interacting with her audience, her live shows still retain the feel of freshness and intimacy that they did back when she played for her family and friends. Influenced by the American roots music she heard in growing up, Kate’s music combines elements of folk, blues, and country with deeply personal and original lyrics.

■ Yumi Nogami

Singer and voice trainer Yumi Nogami explores myriad vocal varieties from opera to enka. She has enjoyed success both in Japan and abroad, making several appearances on stage with various collaborators as well as on TV. You have probably heard her voice in several television commercials, and she is the voice trainer for some of Japan’s top idol bands. As long-time friend of TokyoDex and frequent collaborator at #TnTCafe, we simply couldn’t imagine doing this last show at SDLX without her!

■ onnacodomo

Taking their inspiration from moments and objects from everyday life, visual unit Onnacodomo create shimmering projections are using water, mirrors, found items, improvised artwork and an array of lights. In 2011 they served as the VJs for Buffalo Daughter at the famed Coachella in a show that was so impressive, Ryan Hemsworth invited them back to the festival in 2015 to perform with him.

■ Mariya Suzuki

Mariya Suzuki was born in Nara and studied illustration in Long Beach,California. She currently works as an illustrator in Tokyo. She has contributed her work for many musicians, food professionals, and books and magazines from around the world. In addition to printed media, she also collaborates with interior designers to draw murals. Aside from work, she enjoys going around town to draw subjects whose shape or story catches her attention. At This&That Cafe, she will be showing live projections of her drawings, as well as joining the all-star “TnT Live-Painting Mash-Up.”！

Filmmaker / VJ Born and raised in the states, now Tokyo-based. Always open and into good visuals. With a professional video production background, he works on commercial/music/fashion films, as well as projection mapping, interactive, and visual arts. Travel and party lover.

■ Unusual Club

Our musical style is very broad, hence the “Unusual” name. We typically play a back-to-back set. It sometimes creates discordances since our taste and mood can be different, but we appreciate the “wave” that results. Although our musical styles range from rock, indie, reggae, all the way to dub, funk, jazz, new wave and hip hop, the common ‘roots’ that we often revisit are mostly electronic/techno/house. We have been regular DJs at SNIFF SNIFF (now Roarrr) and CONTROL parties. Paul is English and Sebastien is French Canadian, both based in Tokyo for over 10 years.

This&That Cafe is a periodic event open to the public in which artists from all genres and backgrounds donate their time and talents in the spirt of sharing. It is a place where music and visual arts meld in unexpected collaborations. A forum for artists from afar to meet with local luminaries amidst the dense and eclectic pool of talent in Tokyo. A venue to gather, exchange ideas, share artistic inclinations and wax poetic in a causal community of old friends and new acquaintances. Come early to get a seat and take advantage of the fetching fare on the SuperDeluxe menu, or just pop in for a drink on your way home from work. All are welcome.
