SONORITY invites you into a world where voice, language, and technology merge.

In our daily lives, voice and speech carry meaning — in this workshop & concert, spoken language transforms into music and expands into an immersive audiovisual universe.

Through guided exercises and collective exploration, participants are invited to experiment with their own voices and discover how individual voices can merge into a shared experience. Every tone, syllable, and breath becomes part of a living soundscape. Come experience a space where listening and creating become one.

At the heart of SONORITY lies a hybrid pseudo-language. This evolving sonic language weaves together elements of Danish, English, and Japanese to form a texture that feels both familiar and abstract. It carries no fixed meaning. Instead, it invites emotional and sensory connection through tone, rhythm, and resonance to transcend linguistic and cultural borders.

The immersive multi-speaker system and responsive live visuals evoke a synesthetic experience where technology, sound, image, and emotion intertwine.

You don’t need any previous vocal experience. SONORITY welcomes everyone — singers, listeners, and the simply curious — to join an experience where the voice becomes a medium of connection, and where every participant contributes to a shared, living experience and experiment.

SONORITY is an ongoing project initiated by Johanna Sulkunen in 2018. It has evolved through a trilogy of albums — Koan (2018), Terra (2021), nd Coexistence (2024) and audiovisual concert tours. It is now ready to unfold as a participatory performance and workshops in Japan as part of the ‘Sonic Diplomacy’ project initiated by the Royal Danish Embassy in Japan.

Artist Information:

Johanna Sulkunen (voice, electronics)

Johanna Sulkunen is a Finland-born, Denmark-based composer, singer, improviser, and sound artist who has been active in the international experimental improvised music scene since 2009. She has gained recognition through her solo projects, as a member of the vocal group IKI, and through numerous national and international collaborations. With multiple Danish Music Awards nominations, major festival appearances, and international collaborations under her belt, Sulkunen is setting new standards for the breadth of work an independent musician can achieve at the intersection of contemporary classical experimental music, jazz, and electronica. Sulkunen has worked with notable names such as Tomasz Stanko, Lisa Ullén, and Jørgen Leth. In addition to her background in experimental improvised music, Johanna Sulkunen holds an MA in Anthropology from Helsinki University, a background that influences her music, often characterized by its exploratory nature and focus on humanity’s relationship with nature as well as cultural interactions.

Tapani Toivanen (video)

Artist/engineer Tapani Toivanen (M.Sc in Bioelectronics) works with mixed media contemporary art, including visuals created through direct manipulation of matter (cymatics, 2018), real-time projection-based techniques (2019), and AI (Terra, 2022, Direction 2022). Toivanen specializes in real-time visual projections using direct GPU programming. He explores the emerging role of Generative AI in art and the artist’s role in the changing landscape. He is currently working on an audiovisual piece titled “Nature Talks to Us,” commissioned by the Finnish Ecosystem Observatory (FEO), that monitors the state of biodiversity development in Finnish swamps and the Finnish boreal tundra.
