40 years ago, in 1978 Keiji Haino founded the band Fushitsusha. The band is still currently active and the influence of their sound reaches internationally, far beyond Japan. It is safe to say that Fushitsusha is one of the reasons the Japanese avant-garde music scene is known throughout the world. Although Fushitsusha is known as a trio, it actually started as a duo, with Keiji Haino and Tamio Shiraishi. This is the beginning of Fushitsusha.

Keiji Haino

Born in Chiba on May 3, 1952. Inspired by Antonin Artaud he aimed for the theatre, but an encounter with The Doors stimulated him into music, where he has examined and absorbed a wide range of music from the early blues especially Blind Lemon Jefferson or European medieval music to popular songs across the world. In 1970 he joined a group “Lost Aaraaf” named after Edgar Allan Poe’s poem as a vocalist. Meanwhile, he started to work on home recordings and self-taught the guitar and percussions. In 1978 he formed a rock band “Fushitsusha,” and since 1988, after a recuperation period from 1983 to 1987, he has been internationally active in various forms including solo, groups such as Fushitsusha, Nijiumu, Aihiyo, Vajra, Sanhedrin, Seijaku, Nazoranai or The Hardy Rocks and DJ as “experimental mixture,” as well as collaborations with artists from different backgrounds, drawing the performance of the guitar, percussions, the hurdy gurdy, diverse wind and string instruments, local instruments from across the world and DJ gears to the extreme through unique techniques. He has released more than 170 recordings and performed live at least 1,500 times.

Tamio Shiraishi

Late 1970’s: started performing music in public, collaborated with various musicians (including Keiji Haino) at the club “minor” in Kichijoji, Tokyo. In 1980’s: in Tokyo, participated performances of “Homo-Fictus” (dramatic company), performed with various butoh dancers,,,, 1990: in USA. Performed with various musicians at various places including “abc no rio” in NY. 1992: in Tokyo. often performed at Shinjuku-Nishiguchi station square (on the street). 1994: again in NY. Started performing with many musicians including “CrashWorship”. 2008: started performing at subway stations in NY (still continuing). Now: performing with many artists(mostly musicians but also performance artists) mostly in NY.

GAIAMAMOO

Japanese experimental music duo GAIAMAMOO offers textured, noisy improvised music accompanied by video projections, inspired by traditional Japanese pattern with psychedelic art. The duo focuses on the intersection of sight & image, demonstrated by improvised sounds and abstract visual patterns. Formed in 2012 by Shogo Haraguchi and Mehata Sentimental Legend from Tokyo. In 2015, GAIAMAMOO were chosen to perform on “New Sound Sanctuary” during the Sound Live Tokyo festival, organized by Pacific Basin Arts Communication (PARC). In 2016 and 2018, the duo toured California and New York City, appearing on Ridgewood Radio on WFMU broadcasted by Outpost Artist Resources (NY 2016,17), and opened for Wolf Eyes’ Psycho Jazz in the Bay tour (California, 2017). In 2018, GAIAMAMOO performed at Roulette hosts Mixology Festival (New York), curated by David Weinstein. GAIAMAMOO also appeared in Festes Majors Alternatives de Vallcarca (Barcelona, 2016), Festival GIGANOISE 2 (Tokyo, 2016), Ende Tymes (Brooklyn, 2017), Jazz Art Sengawa_CLUB JAZZ 屏風 (Tokyo, 2017), XFest (Boston, 2018). ELEPHANT NOIZ KASHIMASHI

Tokyo new generation music group established in 2017 pursuing perfect beauty in sound and music. Their first album DISCOVERY was released in 2017 and they are actively performing at clubs, livehouses, and outdoors. Members include these six: singer Fuguri Kataoka who is also President of the PHETISH/TOKYO label, Contemporary artist Mooq Kobayashi, the extremely prolific Zaiden. Okamoto Noize Hiroba who performs with his original steel framed musical instrument. The Venus scum R&B gorilla known as King Kong Japan, Shigeaki Komatsu, and the much loved noisician, guitarist Σ(sigma). In short, ELEPHANT NOIZ KASHIMASHI is top of Japan.

Himenotama

Born in Tokyo, 12-Feb 1993. At the age of 16 she started out working as a freelance underground idol. Himenotama now focuses primarily on live performances and writing. She is the lyricist and singer for the music unit “Je et Georges” which has released “First Order,” “Je et Georges,” and more. Himenotama’s activity as a writer includes the books “Underground Idol As an Occupation” (Asahi Shimbun Publishing) and “Senkou ~ The Secret Life of an Underground Idol” (Saizo Publishing).
