2015年85歳で他界したオーネット・コールマンに直接学び、彼の理論＝実践「ハーモロディクス」を会得した大阪出身のサクソフォニストSoon Kim。いまだその全貌は謎に包まれているハーモロディクスは、彼にとって、演奏者を裸にし、自分の求める音をクリアに認識させ、音楽のコントロールを可能にする思想だといいます。Old SchoolはそのSoon Kimがオリエンタリズムとは無縁かつオリジナルな「ユーラシアのハーモロディクス」を追求するため結成した新しいトリオ。

大阪府出身。15歳よりアルトサックスを始める。 高校卒業後、ロック、ブルース、レゲエ、ジャズバンドで活動。23歳で渡米しニューヨークのハーレムに居住、オーネット・コールマンのもとでハーモロディクス理論を学び、ハーレムでのセッションを中心に活動。アメリカ、ニュージーランド、ドイツでハーモロディクスを元にした独自のアイデアを構築しつつ活動し、『Non-Transposed Music』（1989）『Soon Kim Trio & Quartet』（Konnex Records、2007）『Non-Transposed Sense』（同、2009）『Hotel the Strasse』（サンノースレコード／地底レコード、2014）を発表。近年は東京都八王子市を拠点に、和太鼓を取り入れた「Old School」、大鼓（おおつづみ）を取り入れた「MURASAKI」、ヴァーノン・リード、カルヴィン・ウェストン、アル・マクドーウェルらと結成した「Tower of Funk」などのプロジェクトを展開。

三重県出身。1990年、鬼太鼓座に入座し、座の創設者・田耕（でんたがやす）に師事。同年から1993年まで、4回のカーネギーホール公演を含め、全米の主要都市にて約500回の公演に参加。その後、座の中心的メンバーとして、国内外で2,000回以上の舞台を務める。2004年、鬼太鼓座より独立しソロ活動に入る。2006年、東京文化会館にてソロコンサートを開催。以来、ヨーロッパ、アフリカ、中東、南米、アジア各地を精力的にツアー。2015年、東久邇宮文化褒章受章。邦楽器にとどまらず、オーケストラ、ジャズ、ロックなどとのコラボレーションにも幅広く取り組み、CD『ichitaro』（2009）『ichitaro #2／風のメロディ』（2013）『ichitaro #3／Cruise』（2015）をリリース。

東京都出身。松野茂氏(国立音楽大学名誉教授)に師事しコントラバスのクラシック奏法を学ぶ。2000年横浜ジャズプロムナードコンペティションに「AAS」で出演し、最多4部門を獲得。2005年「epocus」インドネシアツアーで、インドネシア国立芸大、フランス交流基金ホール等で演奏。ヨーロッパのフリーインプロヴィゼーションに興味を持ち、2008年、2009年、2010年、ドイツに短期滞在しベルリンのライブハウスなどに出演、ドイツのミュージシャンと交流を深める。即興無伴奏ソロやfree jazz , free improvisation のセッションの他、立花秀輝AAS、TRIPLET’S、工藤雄一trio、samA & EAU DE MOND、旧橋壮quartet、大橋祐子trio、楠直孝trio、Darren Moore quintetなどに参加。

邦楽はもちろん、前衛ジャズや現代音楽からロックやポップまで幅広く活動するハイパー箏（こと）奏者。故・沢井忠夫、沢井一恵に師事。NHK邦楽技能者育成会卒業後、ウェスリアン大学客員教授として渡米中、ジョン・ケージやジョン・ゾーンらに影響を受ける。ゾーンのプロデュースによるソロ・アルバム『Shizuku』（99年）を皮切りに、自己の箏アンサンブルとの『ゆらる』（01年）、17絃ソロ作『Seventeen』（05年）、インゲブリグト・ホーケル・フラーテン（b）とポール・ニルセン・ラヴ（ds）を迎えた『ライヴ！アット・スーパーデラックス』（06年）をリリース。06年にペーター・ブロッツマン（s）、ポール・ニルセン・ラヴとトリオを結成し、『Head On』（08年）と『ヴォルダ』（10年）をリリース。最新作はエリオット・シャープ（g）とのデュオ作『リフレクションズ』（10年）。08年、ラヴィ・シャンカール、パコ・デ・ルシアらと共に英国のワールドミュージック誌 “Songlines” の《世界の最も優れた演奏家50人》に選ばれる。Moers Jazz Festival（ドイツ）、Vision Festival（米国）、Kongsberg Jazz Festival（ノルウェー）、Újbuda Jazz Festival（ハンガリー）、Music Unlimited（オーストリア）、Instal（イギリス）等に出演。世界のトップ・インプロヴァイザーと共演するかたわら、プログレッシヴ・ロック・アーティストのスティーヴン・ウィルソン（Porcupine Tree）、アコーディオン奏者のcoba、更に浜崎あゆみ、アンジェラ・アキやTakuya（元Judy & Mary）といったJ-POPアーティストのレコーディングやステージにも参加。現在は本田珠也（ds）、田中徳崇（ds）、トッド・ニコルソン（b）、須川崇志（b）と結成した《八木美知依ダブル・トリオ》を活動の核とし、オリジナル曲を中心としたレパートリーを聴かせている。

田中徳崇（ドラムス）
1977年福岡出身。ロレッタセコハンなどでバンド活動をはじめ、二十代をアメリカ、シカゴで過ごす。ジャズと現代音楽を学び、数多くのグループに参加。ジャズを中心としながらもジャンルの垣根を意識しない演奏活動を行い、なかでもTortoiseなどを始めとするシカゴ音響派世代との交流が深い。2007年に帰国し、様々な即興演奏を行うとともに最近では日野皓正、Peter Brotzmann、高瀬アキ、井野信義、ケイ赤城、八木美知依、Bonnie’Prince’Billy、Josephine Fosterのグループなどに参加。
Joe Talia（ドラムス）
オーストラリア・メルボルン在住のドラマー／コンポーザー／プロデューサー／サウンドエンジニア。もともとコンテンポラリージャズ／インプロビゼーション界のドラマーとして評価を得ていた彼は、Andrea Keller Quartet、Oren Ambarchiとのデュオなど数多くのプロジェクトに参加しているが、近年はそれと平行して、ソロやJames Rushfordとのデュオ、またNed Collette、Francis Plagne、Yuko Konoなどアウトサイダーシンガーソングライターのドラマーとして、幅広く活動している。スタジオエンジニアとしては、NAZORANAI（Oren Ambarchi・Stephen O’Malley・灰野敬二）、灰野敬二・Jim O’Rourke・Oren Ambarchiトリオ、Richard Pinhasなどのアルバムのミックスの他、オーストラリアを中心とした様々なミュージシャンのアルバムのプロデュース・録音・ミックス・マスタリングを手がけている。

Old School
Soon Kim, saxophonist from Osaka, studied the theory and practice of Harmolodics directly with Ornette Coleman, who passed away at the age of 85 in 2015. The whole picture of Harmolodics hasn’t been brought to light yet, but for him it is a philosophy that strips a player stark-naked, lets them identify the sounds that they want and enables them control music. Old School is a new trio formed by Soon Kim to pursue what he calls “Eurasian Harmolodics,” which is not orientalistic at all but totally original. Old School is their name, but expect music of today.

Born in Osaka. Began playing the alto saxophone at the age of 15. After graduating high school, played with rock, blues, reggae and jazz bands. Moved to Harlem, New York, at 23, where he studied the Harmolodics theory with Ornette Coleman and had sessions. Since then, building his own ideas based on Harmolodics, he has worked in the U.S., New Zealand and Germany and released (1989), Soon Kim Trio & Quartet (Konnex Records, 2007), Non-Transposed Sense (do., 2009) and Hotel the Strasse (Sun North Records / Chitei Records, 2014). Recently, based in Hachioji, Tokyo, he has been developing such projects as “Old School” involving Japanese wadaiko drums, “MURASAKI” with Noh otsuzumi drums and “Tower of Funk” with Vernon Reid, Calvin Weston and Al McDowell.

Born in Mie. Joined Ondekoza in 1990 and studied with the founder Tagayasu Den. Performed in as many as 500 shows across the U.S., including four shows at Carnegie Hall, by 1993 and then played more than 2,000 stages in Japan and the world as a central member of the group. In 2004, he became independent and started solo activities. He presented a solo concert at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan in 2006, and since then frequently toured in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South America and Asia. Received the Higashi-Kuninomiya International Prize in 2015. Not only working on Japanese traditional instruments but also collaborating with orchestra, jazz and rock, he has released ichitaro (2009), ichitaro #2 / Kaze no Melody (2013) and ichitaro #3 / Cruise (2015).

Yutaka Kaido (Bass)
Born in Tokyo, studied classical technique of double bass under Shigeru Matsuno of Kunitachi College of music. In 2000, Kaido won four awards in the Yokohama Jazz Promnade competition with the quartet "AAS". In 2005 he performed with the trio "EPOCUS" at the National Art University of Indonesia and the International Foundation Hall in Indonesia. Kaido became involved In european free improvisation when he performed with musicians in Berlin during 2008, 2009 and 2010. He now performs solo improvisation and with groups such as AAS, EPOCUS, TRIPLET'S, samA & EAU DE MOND, Yuko Ohashi Trio, Naotaka Kusunoki Trio, Yukiko Hayakawa Quintet, Darren Moore Quintet, and many others.

Michiyo Yagi studied koto under Tadao Sawai, Kazue Sawai and Satomi Kurauchi, and graduated from the NHK Professional Training School for Traditional Musicians. Between 1989 and 1990, during her tenure as Visiting Professor of Music at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, U.S.A., she premiered numerous modern compositions for koto and came under the influence of maverick American composers such as John Cage, Conlon Nancarrow, and John Zorn. Her solo koto CD Shizuku was produced by Zorn and released on the Tzadik label in 1999. In 2001 she recorded "Yural" with her koto ensemble Paulownia Crush for the East Works label. Under the auspices of the Japan Foundation, Yagi toured Russia with this ensemble in the fall of 2004.
Yagi is one of the few improvising koto players on the international stage. Joe Talia is an Australian drummer, composer and record producer/engineer based in Tokyo. He first established his reputation as a drummer in contemporary jazz and improvised music fields in which he is now active as a member of the ARIA award winning Andrea Keller Quartet and in numerous collaborative projects, including a long-term duo with Oren Ambarchi. In the last few years a great deal of his work as a drummer has taken place alongside outsider singer-songwriters (such as Ned Collette, Yuko Kono and Francis Plagne), in groups which synthesize his adventurous, exploratory drumming with the demands of song form. His longstanding musical partnership with Ned Collette has resulted in four records, on which Talia acts as both drummer and producer/engineer, most recently Networking in Purgatory (Bronze Rat 2013). In addition to the collaborations above he has performed, recorded and toured with Jim O'Rourke, Anthony Pateras, Richard Pinhas, John Duncan, Brous, Mary Halvorson, The Australian Art Orchestra, Thembi Soddell, Anthea Caddy, Sean Baxter, Robbie Avenaim, David Shea, Marco Fusinato, Rand and Holland, Adam Simmons, Magic Mountain Band, among others.
