1942年4月17日、オランダのアムステルダム近郊のザーンダムで生まれる。 60年代には、多彩で非凡なドラマーとして認められ、彼が師と仰ぐケニー・クラークの代役として、アメリカン・ジャズ・スターズのツアーに同伴した。当時の彼のプレイは、64年のエリックドルフィーの「ラスト・デイト」や69年のデクスター・ゴードンのアルバム「ライブ・アット・アムステルダム・パラディソ」で聴くことができる。同時期ベニンクは、ジャズを起源とはしない新たな独自性として発展しはじめたヨーロッパの即興音楽の創造に参加していた。67年ミシャ・メンゲルベルグ (pf)らと共に、ミュージシャンの集合体であるインスタント・コンポーザーズ・プール (ICP)を設立する。これが後にICPオーケストラと発展する。その活動はICPオーケストラを始め、現在にいたるまで、ウィレム・ブロイカー、ペーター・ブロッツマンなどに並んで、ヨーロッパ・フリージャズ / フリー・インプロヴィゼーション・シーンのパイオニア的ドラマーとして輝かしいキャリアを築き、その精力的な活動、素晴らしいセンスとスキルにより生み出されるドラムプレイは未だ多く音楽ファンの心をつかんで離さない。

1969年シカゴ生まれ。Derek Baileyの音楽と出会い、13才のジム少年はロンドンにBaileyを訪ねる。ギターの即興演奏に開眼し実験的要素の強い作品を発表、John Faheyの作品をプロデュースする一方でGastr Del SolやLoose Furなど地元シカゴのバンドやプロジェクトに参加、「シカゴ音響系」と呼ばれるカテゴリーを確立する。一方で、小杉武久と共に Merce Cunningham舞踏団の音楽を担当、Tony Conrad、Arnold Dreyblatt、Christian Wolffなどの作曲家との仕事で現代音楽とポストロックの橋渡しをする。1998年超現代的アメリカーナの系譜から『Bad Timing』、1999年、フォークやミニマル音楽などをミックスしたソロ・アルバム『Eureka』を発表、大きく注目される。1999年から2005年にかけてSonic Youthのメンバー、音楽監督として活動し、広範な支持を得る。2004年には、Wilcoの『A Ghost Is Born』のプロデューサーとしてグラミー賞を受賞、現代アメリカ音楽シーンを代表するクリエーターとして高く評価され、ヨーロッパでも数々のアーティストをプロデュースする。また、日本文化への造詣が深く、近年は東京に活動拠点を置く。日本でのプロデュース・ワークとしては、くるり、カヒミ・カリィ、石橋英子など多数。坂田明、大友良英、山本精一、ボアダムスなどとの共同作業や、武満徹作品『コロナ東京リアリゼーション』(2006)など現代音楽に至る多彩な作品をリリースしている。映像作家とのコラボレーションとしてWerner Herzog、Olivier Assayas、青山真治、若松考二などの監督作品のサウンドトラックを担当。ジム自身も映画監督として活動しており、彼の作品は、2004年と2006年にはホイットニー・ビエンナーレ、2005年にはロッテルダム映画祭で「重要作品」として上映されている。ソロとしての最近作『The Visitor』(2009)は『Bad Timing』の現代版と言える密室的ワンマン・アルバムの極致と言える。新しい「知」の探求者としてオルタナティヴ、ポストロック、エクスペリメンタル・ポップ、映画音楽、フリー・ミュージック、ジャズ、アメリカーナ、現代音楽など様々なジャンルの極北を切り開く越境的活動を行ない「現代東京カルチャー」の先導者となりつつある。
MUGAMICHIRU
セッションの延長線上に浮上した色彩感、透明度、重力を最大限に音楽表現するハードコアアンビエンスユニット。2016年12月に六本木スーパーデラックスにて起動、2017年4月にライヴ録音から再構築したCDｰR「POLAND」をリリース。
冒頭。鳶の高く鋭い声が響き渡る。その生々しさに、そばで寝ていた猫がむっくりと起き上がり、聞き耳を立て、ニャアと一声啼いた。雨垂れのようなドラムスの音が重なり、むせかえるほど濃密なヴィジュアル・イメージを喚起する。どこまでも解き放たれる解放感と、深く暗い海の底で蠢く密室感が同居したような奇妙なカタルシスを覚えてしまう。これが、唯一無二のMUGAMICHIRUの世界。ナカコー(g,sampler)、中村達也(ds)、ナスノミツル(b)が新バンド「MUGAMICHIRU」を結成したと聞いたのは去年の秋のことだ。年末に初ライヴがおこなわれ、以来ライヴを重ねるのみならず、早々にアルバムまで作ってしまった。それがこの『POLAND』である。彼らがこのバンドに強い手応えを感じている証拠だろう。バンドの結成はナスノ主催のインプロヴィゼーション音楽のイベントで3人が顔を合わせたことがきっかけだという。なので彼らのライヴはあくまでも即興が主体であり、基本となる楽曲はあってもそのつど自在に変化していくというスタイルだろう。今作はMUGAMICHIRUのライヴ音源を素材に、ナスノが中心になってカットアップ・コラージュしたものだ。鳶の声や男性の声素材、ナスノ自らフィールド・レコーディングした現実音などのSEも随所に配置されている。いわば伸びやかで広がりのあるライヴの自由な解放感と、緻密で計算されたスタジオでの構築作業が一体となって、MUGAMICHIRUの濃密な世界観が作り上げられているのである。ダークで深遠なアンビエント・ドローン音響は、ナカコーの最近の音楽指向にも通じるものだし、そのイマジネーションに富んだ柔らかく奥深いアンサンブルの妙は、中村が勝井祐二やヤマジカズヒデ、映像作家の豊田利晃らとやっているTWIN TAILからも感じたものだ。あるいはその奔放なコラージュ感覚はナスノの初リーダー作『Prequel Oct.1998 – Mar.1999 + 1』から地続きのようでもある。静寂と喧噪の間を交互に揺れながら、心拍数が徐々に上がっていき意識が遠ざかっていくような体験。3人の経験とスキルとセンスが絡み合って作り上げられた美しく繊細で力強い音のアラベスク。MUGAMICHIRU=無が満ちる？夢が充ちる？POLAND=ポーランド？言葉のない音楽。アーティストからの説明もない。音楽同様、タイトルやバンド名の解釈もまた聴き手に委ねられている。そこで必要とされるのは想像力だ。何も難しいことはない。あるパンクスはこんなことを言っている。「お前の頭を開いてちょっと気軽になって楽しめ」

BLANKEY JET CITY。稀代のドラマー。現在の活動はソロ演奏を筆頭に、斉藤和義(vo, g)との無頼派ユニット「MANNISH BOYS」や、チバユウスケ(g)、イマイアキノブ(g)とのベースレス・３ピースバンド「The Golden Wet Fingers」。KenKen(b)とのバトル・ユニット「SPEEDER-X」。仲井戸麗市(g)、蔦谷好位置(key)らとの「the day」の他、FRICTION、TWIN TAIL、そして自身のプロジェクト「LOSALIOS」などを継続して活動中。多くのバンドを担う傍らで、画家の黒田征太郎とのライブ・ペインティングや、舞踊家の田中泯との創作ライブも精力的に行っている。俳優としても活躍しており『BULLET BALLET バレット・バレエ』(00年／塚本晋也監督)、『涙そうそう』(06年／土井裕秦監督)に出演。 『蘇りの血』(09年／豊田利晃監督)では初の主演を務め特異な存在感を漂わせた。’10年にはNHK大河ドラマ「龍馬伝」にも登場。最新の出演作としては、映画『野火』(15年/塚本晋也監督)。またTVドラマ＆映画「HiGH & LOW」にも出演中。

ナカコー (guitar/electronics)
ナカコーことKoji Nakamura (ミュージシャン）Gt.Vo.Synなどを担当。アーティストへの楽曲提供や、多くのCMやアニメ、などのサウンドクリエーターとしても活躍中。1995年地元青森にてバンド「スーパーカー」を結成し2005年解散。ソロプロジェクト「iLL」や「NYANTORA」を立ち上げる。その活動はあらゆる音楽ジャンルに精通する可能性を見せメロディーメーカーとして確固たる地位を確立し、CMや映画、アートの世界までに届くボーダレスなコラボレーションを展開。その他remixerとしても様々なアーティトを手がけ遺憾なくその才能を発揮している。現在はフルカワミキ(ex.スーパーカー)、田渕ひさ子(bloodthirsty butchers, toddle)、そして牛尾憲輔(agraph)と共にバンド「LAMA」として活動の他、現代美術作家の三嶋章義（ex. ENLIGHTENMENT）を中心にしたプロジェクト、MECABIOtH（メカビオス）でも活動した。また、主宰レーベル「Sound Of Romances」もスタートさせている。また、2014年4月には自身の集大成プロジェクトKoji Nakamuraを始動させ「Masterpeace」をリリース。そして、10月大阪クラブクアトロ、名古屋クアトロ、恵比寿リキッドルームでワンマンライブを行った。キャリアを重ねつつも進化し続けるナカコーを示唆するライブとなった。

ナスノミツル (bass)
エレクトリックベース奏者にして即興演奏家。多岐にわたる音楽活動の中から既存のベーシストとは一線を画すスタイルをつくりあげて来た。ナスノはこれまで、ベースという楽器にこだわりベースの可能性を追求することによって、その演奏スタイルや演奏に対する姿勢を明確にして来た。そしてそのことは同時に、ナスノの音楽に対する精神性を明示するものとも言える。

クラブ黎明期から活躍する東京を代表するSelectorの一人。90年代は初期レアグルーヴのオリジネーターとして活躍。また、アルバム『routine』がドイツ99recordより世界発売、世界中で絶賛される。2000年代に入るとコンピレーション『Routine Jazz』シリーズが記録的なセールス。 またGilles PetersonのWORLDWIDEで特集も組まれるなど、高い評価を受ける。そして近年はそうした過去のプレイスタイルを大幅にイメージチェンジ。LEFT FIELDをキーワードに、実験性に富んだ表現スタイルを追求。去年リリースした最近の集大成とも言うべきCD, 「Whole lotta shakin’ goin on」は「2016年のペットサウンズ」と紹介されるなど、その新境地は早くも音楽マニアの間で絶賛されている。

Drummer and multi-instrumentalist Han Bennink was born in Zaandam near Amsterdam in 1942. His first percussion instrument was a kitchen chair. Later his father, an orchestra percussionist, supplied him with a more conventional outfit, but Han never lost his taste for coaxing sounds from unlikely objects he finds backstage at concerts. He is still very fond of playing chairs.In Holland in the 1960s, Bennink was quickly recognized as an uncommonly versatile drummer. As a hard swinger in the tradition of his hero Kenny Clarke, he accompanied touring American jazz stars, including Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster, Wes Montgomery, Johnny Griffin, Eric Dolphy and Dexter Gordon. He is heard with Gordon on the 1969 album "Live at Amsterdam Paradiso" (on the Affinity label) and with Dolphy on 1964s "Last Date" (PolyGram). At the same time, Bennink participated in the creation of a European improvised music which began to evolve a new identity, apart from its jazz roots. With fellow Dutch pioneers, pianist Misha Mengelberg and saxophonist Willem Breuker, he founded the musicians collective Instant Composers Pool in 1967. Bennink anchored various bands led by Mengelberg or Breuker, and appeared in their comic music-theater productions.Bennink attended art school in the 1960s, and is also a successful visual artist in several media, often constructing sculpture from found objects, which may include broken drum heads and sticks. He has designed the covers for many LPs and CDs on which he appears. Bennink is represented by Amsterdam's Galerie Espace, and has been the subject of several one-man shows, including one at the Gemeente Museum in the Hague in 1995. In 1966, Bennink played the US's Newport Jazz Festival with the Mengelberg quartet. From the late 1960s through the '70s Bennink collaborated frequently with Danish, German, English and Belgian musicians, notably saxophonists John Tchicai and Peter Brötzmann, guitarist Derek Bailey and pianist Fred van Hove. Bennink, Brötzmann and van Hove had a longstanding trio well documented on FMP Records. There Bennink also showcased his talents on clarinet, trombone, soprano saxophone and many other instruments, also featured in a series of solo albums he began in 1971. Bennink's many recordings from the 1980s include sessions with Mengelberg's ICP Orchestra (where he remains), South African bassist Harry Miller, soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy, trombonists Roswell Rudd and George Lewis, and big-bandleaders Sean Bergin and Andy Sheppard. From 1988 to '98 Bennink's main vehicle was Clusone 3, with saxophonist and clarinetist Michael Moore and cellist Ernst Reijseger, a band noted for its free-wheeling mix of swinging jazz standards, wide-open improvising, and tender ballads. Clusone played Europe and North America, West Africa, China, Vietnam and Australia, and recorded five CDs for Gramavision, hat Art and Ramboy. Nowadays he is frequently heard with tenor saxophonist Tobias Delius's quartet and in a trio with pianist/keyboardist Cor Fuhler and bassist Wilbert de Joode, and he still collaborates occasionally with jazz luminaries such as Johnny Griffin, Von Freeman and Ray Anderson. A conspicuous feature of Bennink's musical life since the 1960s is the spontaneous duo concert with musicians of many nationalities and musical inclinations; in the '90s he recorded in duo with among others pianists Mengelberg, Irene Schweizer and Myra Melford, guitarist Eugene Chadbourne, trumpeter Dave Douglas and tenor saxophonist Ellery Eskelin. Since 2008 Bennink has his own Han Bennink Trio with Joachim Badenhorst on clarinet and Simon Toldam on piano.

Jim O'Rourke
Born 1969 in Chicago. O’Rourke encountered the music of Derek Bailey as youngster and began visiting him in London at the age of 13. Eyes opened to the power of improvisational guitar, he released several of his own highly experimental works and has worked closely with John Fahey and Loren Mazzacane Connors. During his long association with the Chicago experimental and improv scene O’Rourke participated in several bands and projects including Gastr Del Sol and Loose Fur. His work with Takehisa Kosugi music director of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company as well as Tony Conrad, Arnold Dreyblatt, Christian Wolff and others built bridges between contemporary and popular music. O’Rourke’s release of landmark albums Bad Timing and Happy Days in 1997 and Eureka in 1999 garnered much attention. From 1999 to 2005 he was a member of Sonic Youth, playing bass, guitar and synthesizer as well as recording and mixing the band. In 2004 he won a Grammy Award for his production of Wilco’s A Ghost is Born. O’Rourke has also earned a loyal following for his participation in numerous albums by various artists around the world. He has a deep knowledge of Japanese culture and currently lives in Tokyo. Some of his many production credits in Japan include Quruli, Kahimi Karie, and Eiko Ishibashi. He also continues to be a consummate collaborator, working with Akira Sakata, Merzbow, Yoshihide Otomo, Seiichi Yamamoto, Boredoms and others. His recordings of Toru Takemitsu’s Corona for pianists Tokyo Realization was awarded the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival Award for Excellence in 2006. He has also scored films by Werner Herzog, Olivier Assayas, Shinji Aoyama, Koji Wakamatsu and others. His own short films have been part of the 2004 and 2006 Whitney Biennial and the 2005 Rotterdam Film Festival. O'Rourke is a diverse and powerful artist. Always searching, his borderless activity goes beyond the common labels Alternative, Post-rock, Experimental-pop, Film music, Free music, Jazz, Americana, Contemporary music and continues to defly classification.
